Options for Traditional Wedding Favors

The tradition of giving wedding favors began many centuries ago in Europe & was a popular custom amongst the aristocracy who would give little boxes of almonds or sugar cubes, which were considered a delicacy back then & only afforded by the wealthy.

Today wedding favors range from chocolates to pizza cutters, photo frames to bottle stoppers. With themed designs & customizable, personalized designs very popular amongst many couples, there is no limit to what can be achieved with modern wedding favors.

But what if you want a more traditional wedding favor?  Here are a few options for you to consider:

  1. Almonds – The oldest favor of them all.  You will find a various varieties of almonds to choose from including Jordanian, Italian, sugared & candy coated.  Traditionally they were given in either three’s or fives which would represent – health, wealth, happiness, longevity & fertility.  You can present them in small boxes, mini bags or tulle nets.
  2. Chocolates – A modern wedding favor, but now regarded as something of a traditional one & a good alternative to almonds.  Chocolates are available in a variety of styles & flavors but the most traditional include candy coated, foil wrapped hearts & truffles.  Depending on which you choose they can be presented in boxes or bags.  Some chocolates may be too large to fit into tulle nets.  As above with almonds you would generally give them in threes or fives.
  3. Bells – Miniature wedding bells have become a symbol of weddings & as such as fitting wedding favor.  Miniature wedding bells are usually available in gold or silver colors with the best quality versions made with a clapper inside so they can ring.  Traditionally, guests would ring the bells each time the bride & groom walked past, who would then have to stop & kiss!  Other traditions say they should be rung each time the bride & groom leave or enter the room.
  4. Horseshoes – A lucky symbol commonly associated with weddings.  It is traditional for the bride to carry a horseshoe with her bouquet & miniature or full size versions are available to give as wedding favors.  Legend says that you should never turn a horseshoe upside down or the good luck will run out!
  5. Mints – A small box of mints is another traditional wedding favor that is still popular today.  Like almonds & chocolates they can be presented in small boxes or bags, although many couples choose stylish tins with personalized labels as an alternative.  Mints can make for a pleasing favor & one which you guests may appreciate after their meal.
  6. Candles – Candles have also had a strong association with weddings & are very popular as wedding favors.  For a traditional wedding stick with plain white votive candles, perhaps with a simple holder included.  Candles look stylish presented on their own or placed inside an organza bag.
