Formal weddings tend to err on the side of tradition and as such as more likely to involve a religious ceremony and a reception full of all the customs and rituals that are associated with weddings today. If you are having a religious ceremony then you may well have been given a list of suitable wedding songs and hymns that your wedding officiant has pre-approved. For your reception you need to choose music which will set the right ambience but which will get your guests in the mood to party! Background music for the cocktail hour and wedding breakfast should be along the lines of classical or instrumental music and should not be too loud or too fast. You want your guests to be able to mingle and chat to each other comfortably without feeling they have to compete with the music.

If there is room at your venue and your budget will allow it, then live music from a soloist, harpist or even string quartet could provide the perfect balance for your wedding day. Just make sure that if you do use CD’s for your music that they are long enough to see you through the element of your day you are playing them for and it is always worth delegating someone the responsibility of making sure there are no untimely interruptions to the music.

Once the formalities of the ceremony and reception are over with then it is time to let your hair down and party. For your evening reception anything goes – cheesy disco, dance floor classics whatever you want. There is nothing formal about the evening party so create a playlist that will get everyone on to the dance floor and which will keep them there all night.
